EFFECT OF AQUEOUS EXTRACT OF YAM ON DIFFERENT LARVAL INSTAR OF Spodoptera frugiperda IN CORN CROP
ABSTRACT - The aim of this study was to evaluate the mortality of fall armyworm using the aqueous extract of the yam. In the preparation of extracts, 200g of powder of yam plus 800mL of distilled water immersed for 24 hours to obtain the stock solution, which was filtered and diluted to 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20%. Portions of maize leaves BR 106 were dipped for thirty seconds in different treatments, spread on paper towel to evaporate the excess of water, and placed in Petri dishes lined with filter paper. Larvae in 1st,3rd and 5th instars were then placed on leaves treated. Larval mortality was assessed after six days changing maize leaves after three days. It was found that the extract was 20% which cau-sed higher mortality of 100% of the larvae in 1st instar died in the first assessed and the larvae in 3rd instar showed a control of 80 %, differing from the control with 100% of viability larvae. In caterpillars in 5th instar, the extract did not show efficient control. The yam is presented very promising for the control of fall armyworm.
